Finding the Courage to Move Forward

Updated: Feb 6, 2021

In life we will need to find the courage to overcome life hurdles. In order to overcome these hurdles one will have to find the courage to press on. Finding courage will first mean one would have to trust! Although, trust can be a huge mountain to succumb when a person has been broken or abandoned in the past. It takes courage to accept what’s true, move forward, withstand and let go. “But Jesus was quick to comfort them. “Courage, it’s me. Don’t be afraid.”” Matthew‬ ‭14:27‬ ‭MSG‬‬

I think about the time when I had to find courage to accept that I was actually going to be a single mother and I decided to move forward with my divorce, withstand through the process of it; and lastly...LET GO! I had to make four different decisions to overcome one divorce. When I look back on that process it was definitely more easier to write it down than to actually walk it out. I had no clue how I would make it alone while raising two boys. Which made the divorce process even harder. I was afraid, unsure and indecisive; adding to that I was pressed with anxiety! I was a complete mess, not to mention I was full of rage, unforgiveness and bitterness! You can go through a process and get to the end of it and still need to let go! This brings to my mind the process of an funeral; you’re so busy completing all the natural steps that you really never let go of the inner turmoil and pain. When the natural process is over it’s like you’re in a huge empty room, all alone with tons of suppressed feelings just staring at you. One by one you must began the process of letting go!

In order to have courage you’ll need to trust not only yourself to make that first decision, but also God! If we are going to trust God we will need to rest in his promises to provide, protect and sustain us. To define trust, one will need a firm belief in the reliability, truth, ability, or strength of someone or something. Because God is a spiritual being our trust in God is grounded in faith. Therefore we gain courage to move forward because we believe that God will see us through somehow. “Be strong and let your heart take courage, all you who wait for and hope for and expect the Lord!” Psalm‬ ‭31:24‬ ‭AMPC‬‬

This reminds me of the courage it took Mary (the mother of Jesus) to accept her call to become pregnant with the Son of God! During those times if a woman was caught or found to be sexually active before marriage she would be shunned and would likely never marry or possibly stoned to death. It was considered a disgrace! Mary had to trust in God. Her trust was based on God’s ability to provide, protect and sustain. Her “yes” to God could have cost her marriage to the man that had already chosen her to be his wife. We must be persuaded in our thoughts that God will see us through. To be persuaded is to be convinced of a thing. If someone is going to convince you they will come with all the facts with intense motivation and excitement. They will speak their truth until you come in agreement with them.

Come in agreement with God for your situation. Be of good courage, don’t be afraid. Trust in God and move forward! Sometimes deciding to change directions can be consuming; but staying on the same path of destruction can be detrimental and certainly not worth it in the long run. Once you make the decision to travel the new road, be steadfast...DO NOT RETREAT to familiar ground. Familiar ground will only produce what you currently have. Trust yourself...you made the right decision! This is your “no looking back season” be persuaded over and over until you’re convinced that God will not abandon you. Looking ahead the scenery is different, the road appears long and lonely. You don’t know what lies ahead; but be comforted to know that God has promised to be the lamp on your feet and the light to your path. “Your word is a lamp to my feet And a light to my path.” Psalms‬ ‭119:105‬ ‭NKJV‬‬. Indulge in the word of God until you’re convinced and your faith in God is strengthened.

On this road you will find that you have a lot of time alone, this is your letting go phase. During this time you will need to spend time with God and allow him to mend the wounds of your heart. You cannot mend a wound in the middle of a war. You can only do quick fixes in the war zone. Being in a situation where your heart and emotions are being attacked can leave many emotional and physical wounds. Don’t spend this time smothering yourself with other people, drowning yourself in alcohol or explicit drugs to escape the feelings or creating a new mask to pretend to be whole...spend it with God! Get an understanding of your God given identity, you are not who you have become. Life struggles can manifest a false identity, altering who you really are! If you’re carrying unforgiveness, bitterness and strife in your heart, just take a look in the mirror and ask yourself; “who have I become?” You may be able to look back over your life and remember when joy was in your heart and laughter captivated your environment because you were in the room. That joy is still available for you! Be courageous in this season, take a leap of faith and allow God to reveal your best you to yourself. Don’t be afraid to leave things or people behind. Make this your year to tread upon new grounds and explore areas within yourself that will be a blessing to you and the world around you! Life has so much more to offer you...although YOU must first take the offer!
